Work­ing Safe­ly in Com­mu­ni­ty Night Patrol

CRANAplus was fund­ed by the Depart­ment of the Prime Min­is­ter and Cab­i­net for an 18-month peri­od to devel­op a safe­ty pack­age and com­mu­ni­ca­tions strat­e­gy aimed at increas­ing the safe­ty of the Com­mu­ni­ty Night Patrol (CNP) Work­force. This includ­ed under­tak­ing con­sul­ta­tions to cap­ture the safe­ty con­cerns of the work­force from 81 Night Patrols oper­at­ing with­in the North­ern Ter­ri­to­ry and 6 com­mu­ni­ties in the South Aus­tralian Anan­gu Pit­jan­t­jat­jara Yankun­yt­jat­jara (APY) lands. This work­force com­pris­es of over 400 employ­ees; the major­i­ty are local Abo­rig­i­nal men and women who retain con­nec­tion with coun­try, fam­i­ly, lan­guage, lore and cus­tom allow­ing them to main­tain respect and cul­tur­al author­i­ty with­in their own com­mu­ni­ties. They are often first- respon­ders to acci­dents, injuries, fights and deaths with­in the com­mu­ni­ty, defuse volatile sit­u­a­tions and man­age many of their own fam­i­ly and com­mu­ni­ty dis­putes with­out police intervention.

Work­ing in Com­mu­ni­ty Night Patrol Safe­ty Package

The Work­ing in Com­mu­ni­ty Night Patrol Safe­ty Pack­age com­pris­es a range of resources and tools to pro­mote a safer work­force. It includes:

  • Work­ing Safe­ly in Com­mu­ni­ty Night Patrol eLearn­ing Course. This course aims to assist patrollers to feel more con­fi­dent to keep them­selves, their team and their com­mu­ni­ty safe. In this course patrollers learn key areas to stay­ing safe using sim­ple and easy to fol­low steps. This includes look­ing at a range of sce­nar­ios that patrollers might expe­ri­ence in their job. The course is split into 5 Mod­ules. Each mod­ule takes approx­i­mate­ly 30 – 60 min­utes to com­plete. It is rec­om­mend­ed that patrollers com­plete the course with sup­port from their team leader, coor­di­na­tor or man­ag­er to pro­vide guid­ance and infor­ma­tion spe­cif­ic to their workplace.

  • Work­ing Safe­ly in Com­mu­ni­ty Night Patrol Hand­book. This small hard­copy book­let is a sum­ma­ry of the infor­ma­tion patrollers will learn dur­ing the eLearn­ing course.   • Work­ing Safe­ly in Com­mu­ni­ty Night Patrol Guide­lines. This hard­copy book­let has been devel­oped for com­mu­ni­ty night patrol man­agers. It aims to estab­lish best prac­tise in rela­tion to Com­mu­ni­ty Night Patrol work­force safe­ty. These Guide­lines pro­vides infor­ma­tion, resources and tools to pro­mote con­sis­ten­cy and best prac­tise. They may be adopt­ed or adapt­ed by ser­vice providers to sup­port best prac­tise and con­ti­nu­ity across all Com­mu­ni­ty Night Patrol ser­vices. Work­ing Safe­ly in Com­mu­ni­ty Night Patrol Com­mu­ni­ca­tion Strategy

CRANAplus has col­lab­o­rat­ed with the Cen­tral Aus­tralian Abo­rig­i­nal Media Asso­ci­a­tion (CAA­MA) to pro­duce a pro­mo­tion­al video and a series of Patroller sto­ries that use a sto­ry telling approach to pro­mote the patrollers role and evoke a sense of appre­ci­a­tion and grat­i­tude with­in the com­mu­ni­ty.
