Immunisation Requirements

Across Australia, requirements to be approved as a nurse or midwife immunisation provider differ vastly. Some states and territories require specific courses from specific providers (university or health department based). Some require prescribed clinical immunisation experience. Most jurisdictions accept a range of immunisation courses and list these publicly, however, there is diversity in the courses accepted.

Direct links to individual state and territory requirements for authorisation to immunise are provided here. The clarity and ease of use of the information provided on each site varies. Be prepared to contact the state or territory health department directly to discuss your requirements to ensure you make a training choice that meets your needs.

Note that South Australia Health’s Understanding Vaccines and the National Immunisation Program is currently the most broadly, non-university course recognised. It is accepted in SA, NT WA, Vic and NSW. Requirements are subject to change and you are strongly encouraged to confirm that any course you plan to undertake will meet the state or territory requirements where you intend to work.
